Profile of a Predator: Novelist Shares What She Learned From Research
January 2003
Coastal Family: There have been a lot of reports of children being abducted, sexually abused and murdered in the news lately. Based on your research, what type of person commits this kind of crime?

Tienne: One of the things that makes it so difficult to stop these people, and serial killers who prey on adults as well, is that there is not single "type of person" who commits these crimes. If there where, we would all be able to recognize him (and it is statistically a "him") and keep him away from our children. Pedophiles come from all walks of life. Income and social status are not a factor. There is no single personality type either. The self-possessed, well-mannered businessman can be just as dangerous as the wild-eyed, ill-kempt stranger every parent fears.

It should be noted that not all child killers are pedophiles. Some are, for lack of a better term, specialized serial killers. They are stimulated by the act of killing and may do nothing to the child before killing him or her. Child killers are the most inadequate of all serial killers. Those who specifically target children do so because these are the only victims they feel able to physically and intellectually dominate. When a pedophile kills his victim it is usually for the more pragmatic purpose of keeping the child from identifying him.

...Tienne became fascinated with the work of FBI behavioral profilers such as John Douglas. She read Douglas' autobiography, Mindhunter, and several other books by and about profilers.

"The whole concept was really appealing to me," Tienne says. "By the time I got done reading six, seven, eight books, I had a feel for it - what kind of person commits what crime. And now we have all these wonderful TV shows about forensic stuff."
